Alex Gotting is a widely travelled artist with a ‘constant’ camera at hand. He uses photography as a back-up to his brain, as these split second fragments of what we see every day can help us store memories over a long time and recall a whole host of associations in great detail; everything from experiences to emotions to smells.
In order to have a constant camera at hand, practicality is vital and the medium becomes secondary: any small digital camera will do. It is the concept that is key.
Gotting documents the hectic, excessively busy 24/7 lifestyle of someone who does business around the world. To achieve this, all pictures are taken at slow shutter speed which produces the fast-paced effect of the pictures. The subject is always a famous landmark, taken not from a tourist perspective, but from the artist’s very personal one, the result of having little time and trying to fit it all in.
No image by Alex Gotting can be repeated, no set-up is required and no pre-or post manipulation is done. Every photograph is unique in its origin, as, for example, is the case in the ‘Quadriga’s Dance’ at the Brandenburg gate. The dance was created purely by light sources present through longer exposure time and guiding the camera by hand without a tripod.
An interesting fact of photography is that longer exposure times can result in images which we perceive only subconsciously. The uniqueness of the moment is captured by Gotting with a high degree of authenticity without preparation or manipulation.
In order to appreciate the art, one has to stand still, step back and let the subject reveal it’s self. The viewer’s hectic lifestyle has to stop for a moment and the beauty of an instant is exposed to whoever takes the time to look. Viewing becomes the opposite of seeing.
The title of every photograph is very much part of the work and provides a clue to what the photographer was experiencing, therefore defining the image. The abstractness vanishes with the revelation of the title. The wonder unfolds itself in front of our eyes.
The uniqueness and authenticity of every image is important to the concept and is close to the artist’s heart. Therefore every print is unique and exists in one size only. No duplicates are made. All images are 150 x 200 cm.
